High Holy Days Tikkun Olam Activities 2022/5783

    Social Justice Speaker

Join us on Wednesday, October 5 at 3:00 p.m. for a talk with Cleveland-Marshall College of Law Professor Doron Kalir, who will be speaking about the current legal landscape for reproductive justice.

The program will be available on Zoom for our members and registered guests. Those who had planned to attend in person will still be able gather at our main service location to Zoom together. The presentation will be interactive, and there will be time for questions. Please note, this program will NOT be live-streamed.

    About the presentation

The Supreme Court's Dobbs Decision: How "Egregiously Wrong" Was It?
In his Dobbs Opinion, Justice Samuel Alito described Roe v. Wade as "egregiously wrong." Such a blatant attack on previous opinions – and five decades of Justices who sought to protect those precedents – is almost unheard of in the annals of Supreme Court history. Yet a close examination of Justice Alito's own Opinion (which was joined by four additional members of the Supreme Court, all of whom attested in their confirmation hearings that Roe was "settled law"), may well suggest it's this Opinion that is "egregiously wrong."

For our Yom Kippur Social Justice presentation, our speaker, Cleveland-Marshall College of Law Professor Doron Kalir, will share why he believes the Dobbs decision is wrong – as a matter of law and precedent, as a matter of common sense, and as a matter of public policy.

He'll discuss the shaky grounds on which the Dobbs opinion relies. He'll also touch on errors made by women's rights advocates over the years, as well as quick review of the current wave of federal challenges to Dobbs brought by Jewish organizations claiming a violation of their religious liberties.

Professor Kalir's presentation will be held over Zoom; members and guests who had planned to attend in person will still be able gather at Ratner to Zoom together. Those interested in attending remotely can click here to join by Zoom.

    About our speaker
Professor Doron Kalir was born and raised in Israel. After his military service, he studied and taught law at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He appeared and won several cases before the Israeli Supreme Court before moving to New York in 1998, where he studied and taught law at Columbia Law School, before working in private practice, including at the Skadden law firm. In 2012, he moved to Cleveland to join the faculty of Cleveland-Marshall College of Law.

Professor Kalir’s scholarship focuses on statutory interpretation, federal courts, LGBTQ rights, and Jewish Law.  As Director of the Cleveland-Marshall Appellate Clinic, Professor Kalir appears regularly before the Federal Court of Appeals, representing underprivileged communities such as prisoners, immigrants, low-income litigants and others, pro bono. He is interviewed frequently by national publications including The New York Times, Newsweek, and Business Insider, as well as locally by the Cleveland Jewish News, on issues surrounding the Supreme Court.

Our High Holy Days Tikkun Olam Initiative for 2022/5783

Each year, as part of our communal High Holy Day observance, we offer our members an opportunity to support a Tikkun Olam initiative. This year, we’ve chosen World Central Kitchen (WCK) as our focus.

Founded in 2010 by Chef José Andrés, World Central Kitchen is a nonprofit organization that goes to the frontlines of disasters (including wars and climate disasters) to cook and serve fresh meals to people in need. They work with restaurants, food trucks, and emergency kitchens to establish resilient locally-led food networks. WCK has served more than 200 million meals around the world, providing nourishment, comfort and hope in times of crisis.

We invite you to support Kol HaLev's communal donation to WCK. You can donate online here; or if interested in contributing by check, please use the form in your High Holy Days registration packet.

Members, stay tuned for information about additional related opportunities to learn about and support WCK.
