High Holy Days Tikkun Olam Activities 2023/5784
Social Justice Speaker
Each year on Yom Kippur afternoon, we invite a noteworthy speaker on a social justice topic to speak to our community about their work. We invite you to join us on Monday, September 25 at 2:45 p.m. for a talk with
Katie Paris, founder of Red Wine & Blue
Katie Paris is a 20-year political veteran and a Shaker Heights mom. In 2019, Katie quit her job in national politics to found Red Wine & Blue because she saw an opportunity to increase political engagement among suburban women at the local level.
In just over three years, Katie and her team of 50 (mostly) moms have grown Red Wine & Blue into a community of nearly half a million diverse suburban women working together to defeat attacks on public education, reproductive rights, and democracy – one friend at a time.
Red Wine & Blue runs virtual operations nationally and on the ground in five states: Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Contrary to the media narrative, “suburban” is not synonymous with white, and reflecting the increasing diversity of suburban communities is a core value of the organization. Red Wine & Blue gives women the confidence they need to influence the people they know and organize their communities while having fun along the way.
Prior to founding Red Wine & Blue, Katie was Executive Vice President of Media Matters, a web-based, not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media, which Katie helped launch as its first research director. She also served as Program and Communications Director at Faith in Public Life, which she also helped found. Prior to building national organizations, Katie worked on presidential, U.S. Senate, and gubernatorial campaigns.
Katie will discuss her personal journey to founding Red Wine & Blue, and how it fits in with her constant pursuit of her highest, best use, which she considers a spiritual call.
Ms. Paris' talk will take place in person and on Zoom.
The presentation will be interactive, and there will be time for questions.
Please note, this program will NOT be live-streamed.
Our High Holy Days Tikkun Olam Initiative for 2023/5784
Each year, as part of our communal High Holy Day observance, we offer our members an opportunity to support a Tikkun Olam initiative. This year, we’ve chosen Global Cleveland's initiative to support Ukrainian refugees soon arriving in our area.
Global Cleveland welcomes and connects international people to local opportunities and fosters a more inviting community for those seeking a place to call home. They are expecting two refugee families this fall who will need help, including financial assistance for housing. One family has a Jewish background and is eager to learn more about Jewish culture. There may be future opportunities for our members to volunteer their time in support of these families as well.
We invite you to support Kol HaLev's communal donation to Global Cleveland. You can donate online here; or if interested in contributing by check, please use the form in your High Holy Days registration packet. Donations to GC will be gifted as a collective contribution from the Kol HaLev community.
